A.8304 (Englebright)Summary
This bill would extend provisions of the public authorities law
that prohibit the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) from charging extra
fees to residential customers who voluntarily terminate their electric
service and instead utilize alternative electricity generation systems.
These provisions would be extended until 2014.
Explanation
Unlike the generation of electricity from fossil fuels, solar and wind
energy can be harnessed to produce electricity without producing a range
of harmful pollutants, including the heat trapping pollution that causes
global warming. More widespread adoption of clean, renewable,
electricity generation also alleviates pressure on the electricity grid,
avoiding the need to construct new power plants and could potentially
result in improved system reliability. This bill would prevent LIPA from
charging additional fees to discourage customers from terminating their
service and using electricity generated from alternative sources.
