Global Warming
New
York’s climate, and that of the planet, has been warming
over the past century, mainly due to increased
concentrations of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere.
Scientists believe that the higher levels of carbon
dioxide (CO2)in
our atmosphere are the
result of human activities, principally the combustion
of fossil fuels for energy.
The Regional Greenhouse Gas
Initiative
The
Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) is a 10-state
partnership to stabilize and reduce carbon dioxide
emissions, one of the most abundant heat-trapping gases,
from power plants. This program is an important first
step to reduce the pollution that causes climate change.
Environmental Advocates is a member of the Department of
Environmental Conservation's NYS RGGI Stakeholder Group
and has followed the development of this program since
its inception.
On October 24,
2007, Governor Eliot Spitzer announced New York's
draft rules for implementing RGGI in New York are
available for public comment.
Rule text is available

The
comment period for the New York State CO2
Budget Trading Program ends December 24, 2007.

Regional
Greenhouse Gas Initiative:
Workshop Presentations
On August 22, 2007, Environmental Advocates of
New York, the Pace Law School Energy Project, and
the Alliance for Clean Energy - New York (ACE-NY)
co-sponsored an event that brought together
representatives from environmental advocacy groups
and clean energy technology companies to bring them
up-to-date on key issues associated with the RGGI.
Approximately, 40 to 45 individuals representing as
many organizations met at Pace University to discuss
various aspects of the program. Four presentations
were offered on key topics, as well as a status
report by the DEC. These presentations, meeting
notes and the agenda are available below.
