MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR

Environmental Advocates of New York seeks applicants for a Membership Director who will lead membership outreach, develop a strategy for promoting Environmental Advocates’ work, and manage information about donors to the organization.  The Membership Director will be a full-time exempt position.  This mid-level staff person will report directly to the Executive Director.  

Founded in 1969, Environmental Advocates is the primary environmental government watchdog in Albany and a leading voice for conservation, the environment and public health in New York State. Environmental Advocates is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with a staff of 12 and an annual operating budget of approximately $900,000. 

The Membership Director will be responsible for improving our outreach efforts to current members and expanding our membership base, particularly in parts of New York State where the organization is under-represented.  In addition this person would manage our donor database. 

Environmental Advocates currently has approximately 6,000 members, the majority of whom participate in our online “eAdvocacy network” and are not currently financial contributors. Environmental Advocates seeks to expand our membership base to be more reflective of the statewide impact of our policy work; to better engage members in our work; and to increase member giving.

Specific Responsibilities

Membership Outreach & Stewardship

·         Develop and implement strategies for conducting outreach to individual members (both on- and off-line) and for expanding Environmental Advocates’ membership base:

·         Involve people in our advocacy efforts;

·         Promote the organization and increase visibility by arranging public speaking events for staff, staffing tabling opportunities, and other events, etc.

·         Work with Communications staff on the development of outreach materials, website content, and other communications to members; and

·         Identify and implement strategies and tools to enhance our relationships with members and to better utilize those relationships to advance our program work;

·         Create and implement strategy for growing members into financial contributors.

·         Respond to inquiries from members.

·         Lead and assist other staff with the organization of outreach, donor cultivation, and fundraising events.

·         Develop and implement a strategy to build a volunteer base and involve volunteers in the organization’s work.

Administration & Program Support

·         Assist with maintaining membership records and managing our member database;

·         Coordinate and maintain a calendar of outreach efforts with the activities of other staff;

·         Maintain records of financial contributors in our database and generate regular reports on donor giving;
  and

·         Other duties, as assigned.

Skills/Experience

·       High energy individual who is passionate about environmental protection and motivated to involve others in the cause;

·         Excellent interpersonal skills;

·         Excellent written and oral communications skills and ability to serve as a public representative of the
  organization;

·         Experience planning and executing events;

·         At least two years in development, communications, or community organizing for nonprofit
  organizations, or comparable experience;

·         Familiarity and proficiency with fundraising database software as well as Microsoft Office applications;

·         Familiarity with the use of donor databases for tracking financial contributions, interactions with
  supporters, and organizing supporter information;

·         Experience working for nonprofits, preferably environmental organizations; and

·         Ability to lead and work as part of a team.

Salary & Benefits

Salary range of $35,000 to $40,000 commensurate with experience, excellent health benefits, retirement savings including an employer contribution, and a vibrant, fast-paced work environment.
