Statement re: Community Risk Reduction & Resiliency Act
Executive Director Peter Iwanowicz
“By signing the ‘Community Risk Reduction and Resiliency Act’ into law today, Governor Cuomo took the bold step to protect New Yorkers from future impacts that are being driven by our changing climate. We know too well the destruction caused by extreme weather events and this new law sets the stage for mitigating the threat.
New Yorkers applaud the efforts of Assemblyman Bob Sweeney and Senator Diane Savino to move the bill successfully through the legislature so that it could become law. It is no small feat to get bi-partisan agreement to act on climate.
Now, it is critical that we work just as aggressively to reduce the pollution emitted in New York that is fueling climate change. The state has a great goal of an 80 percent reduction in carbon pollution by 2050, but we need a bold plan of action to get there. A climate action plan for New York can serve as an economic development blueprint that creates good jobs while moving us away from the dirty fossil fuels that should be our past, and towards a clean energy future.”
