January 8, 2003 Statement of Anne Reynolds, Air and Energy Program Director
Environmental Advocates of New York “The Governor’s announcement of a 25 percent renewable energy requirement for New York is excellent news for the state’s public health, economy and environment. It is a significant first step toward implementing a global warming action plan.” Along with a carbon cap on power plant emissions and California-style tailpipe standard, a requirement for more renewable energy in New York was one of several key recommendations of members of Governor Pataki’s Greenhouse Gas Task Force. Thirteen other states already have renewable energy requirements at various levels. “Wind energy, solar, hydropower and biomass businesses are ready to apply the technology know-how to bring cleaner air to New York, keep energy dollars in-state, and diversify our electricity sector. It’s a win-win-win for New York.” “We look forward to working with the Administration to put into action this praiseworthy commitment. We also look forward to implementation of other recommendations of his Task Force, including a carbon cap for power plants.” |
