John Moyers, founder and editor-in-chief of TomPaine.com, a highly regarded independent, commercial-free political journal, will keynote Environmental Advocates of New York’s (EANY) annual Advocate Awards Gala. The New York City event will take place Monday, November 10, 2003 at the Yale Club from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm. The Yale Club is located at 50 Vanderbilt Avenue (across from Grand Central Station).

Begun in 1999, the Advocate Awards recognize individuals who have made unique contributions to protecting New York’s environment and public health. EANY Board of Directors’ President Oakes Ames has announced those who will be honored with the 2003 Advocate Awards:

Carol Ash has been an outstanding leader in the movement to protect and preserve New York’s special places for almost three decades. She is executive director of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission which manages 25 parks and seven historic sites totaling more than 100,000 acres and hosts nearly nine million visitors annually. She has also served as New York State director of The Nature Conservancy.

Tim Barnett became the first executive director of the Adirondack Nature Conservancy in 1972. He has worked miracles negotiating agreements to protect and preserve hundreds of thousands of acres of New York’s precious wilderness. His work continues today as vice president of The Nature Conservancy.

Rob Pirani is director of environmental programs at the Regional Plan Association. He has developed conservation plans for Long Island Sound and the Appalachian Highlands. Currently he is helping to ensure that upcoming redevelopment of Governors Island in New York Harbor will include substantial parks and public spaces.
